Game description

Alexander is the officially licensed real-time strategy PC game tied to Oliver Stone’s upcoming “Alexander” movie starring Colin Farrell. Integrating exclusive footage from the motion picture, the game immerses players in the era of Alexander the Great. Like Alexander, players will face the challenges of managing vast resources, a multitude of units, buildings and advancements, while his enemies always seem to have more of everything.
Blood will be spilt on the battlefield and honor will be put to the test, as the courage and cunning of each decision will determine success. Triumph in epic real-time battles using formations, morale, and authentic battle tactics.

Notes

    This is the last update for the time being. This release is mainly focused on improving usability and ease of use. All of the upcoming releases will be installer based. This update is still all about implementing official RU only patches into my DIY international release. These changes affect both balance and performance of the game and make it way more stable. The list below is a loose translation of russian changelog of both of the included patches. Turns out the russian release had a priority over european version and was the only one to get a patch from the original devs. All of the changes have been ported and merged with my previous modifications. Modding installer and stiching it all back together so it works and functions as it should was a major pain in the ass. I hope you like it. Internet play will not work, even if you're a legit registered user with a serial key and all that due to lots of modifications in the client. You're able to play with you friends through LAN/VPN only. In the upcoming weeks there will be a post containing links to three fully working and untampered clients, so those who are interested in a stock experience can do their thing. I have also made a couple of batch scripts, so you're able to change between the langages in a matter of seconds. More instructions below. 

    1.02 Changelog

    Optimization and code acceleration

    • General code optimization. Acceleration 15-20%
    • Added the ability to set a limit when playing in multiplayer, skirmish and the Internet. Players can play with a fixed limit, which cannot be exceeded. Now players can choose such limit so that the game does not slow down on their computers. The downside is that at low limits, nations targeting a large number of cheap troops are weaker than other nations. Advice on how to avoid this disadvantage - if you have a weak computer and you play with a low limit - do not play Egypt.
    • Added a limit on the construction of ballistas, catapults, elephants, chariots, ships, as well as an inscription that these units can no longer be built if the limit is exceeded - made in order not to lead to slow downs due to the large number of 3D units.
    • Optimized the pathfinding of ships in the islands.
    • Optimized server for internet games. It was possible to reduce lags and reduce traffic.

    AI improvements

    • AI / player controlled elephants now behave more rationally, finding a target and fighting correctly using all their special abilities.
    • The "Don't shoot" button has been introduced for the towers. By default, the tower shoots, but if necessary, the shooting can be turned off.
    • Improved control of AI ships. Optimized pathfinding and finding targets within the radius of their own.
    • The AI ​​did not finish building bridges if enemy units were standing alongside the dock.
    • For different types of games in skirmish, different modifications of the AI ​​are made so that the actions of the AI ​​are as adequate as possible to the rules of the game:
      • Archers now walk under cover of infantry and cavalry and actively try to kill the enemy's "City Center".
      • Heroes leave the base only if there are at least two companies of warriors, stay behind and, if possible, do not engage in battle. If the number of HP is less than 1000, or if there are fewer than one company left, the heroes return to the base to the temple of priests, where they are treated. The third ability will turn on only when there is at least one allied company of soldiers and at least one enemy company of soldiers nearby. Also, heroes, upon reaching levels, first raise the most useful skills.
      • Archers destroy distant mines of opponents prioritizing the upgraded types.
      • The priority when destroying the enemy's houses is given to the weakly protected buildings. 

    Balance improvements

    • Reduced the construction time of the "Port".
    • Strengthened the role of walls in the game. Soldiers now only deal 1 damage. Walls can only be removed by siege engines.
    • The abilities of heroes now affect hired units as well.
    • Now, after the death of a hero and his re-construction in multiplayer, skirmish and the Internet, he does not lose the experience gained earlier. This increases the fun and consistency of the multiplayer Heroes mode.
    • With each leveled heroes get +100 HP, +1 armor to everything, +5 damage. Now the hero, when rocked, does not die in random battles and more weight in battles.
    • Increased the demage of Nubian archers, but slowed down their production time.
    • The price of the Persian Diplomatic Center has increased by 500 gold, and its construction time has increased.
    • Reduced the cost of the Persian Forge.
    • Reduced the minimum range of fire for Persian archers, their price reduced by 40 food.
    • Peltasts have reduced defense against piercing weapons and increased defense against blunt weapons.
    • Mercenary riders have decreased defense and HP.
    • Reduced the cost of a hired archer.
    • The hypospis has reduced demage.
    • The Indian scout has increased demage and protection against piercing weapons, upgrades to it have become cheaper.
    • Egyptian ax warriors removed their piercing weapon protection.
    • Reduced the price of an upgrade that increases HP for houses in Egypt.
    • Changed prices for more than 30 upgrades in different nations
    • Changed the price of upgrades that increase the construction speed of Egyptian units.

    Improvements and fixes for MP LAN and Online

    • Out of sync in the online game between versions in different languages.
    • Added input of the server name in the list of multiplayer rooms, that is, you can enter the game via LAN by typing the server name in the corresponding line.
    • An option has been added to show the player for some reason he cannot start the game in multiplayer and the Internet (there are not enough players, the player is not ready, etc.).
    • Added an option to allow the player to save all profile information for faster internet access. 
    • Added a ready / not ready button on the server. If one of the players does not press the ready button, the game cannot be started.
    • Added highlighting of the number of rating points a player has in the player info screen.
    • Added an option for more convenient clan management in the Internet game, now a player who has just joined a clan does not immediately receive an icon, but only when the head recognizes him as a full member of the clan.
    • Added the ability to play a saved game online.
    • Added the ability to move from line to line using the "Tab" key in the Internet game menus.
    • Added descriptions to all buttons of the Internet game, and also added shortcuts to them.
    • Added Notice: Game Experience May change During Online Play
    • The password for entering the Internet game is now entered in the form of asterisks to improve security.
    • Rating games on the Internet will now run on one fixed condition.
    • Now you can use graphics in the "* .g2d" format for clan icons (previously, only "* .g17").
    • A new type of online rating game has been added, where you need to capture enemy territory. It happens in the following way. We go into the rating game with the display of the world map. We select one of the countries on this map and press the "Play" button. As soon as someone chooses another country, the server will connect the players and they will start playing with the selected races. The winning player increases the territory of his country, and the loser decrease. If you like a certain nation, why not expand its territory.
    • Long e-mail addresses did not appear in the info in Internet Shell.
    • When exiting an Internet game, the server did not go to the Internet game menu, but immediately to the main menu.
    • Menu (F12) was flashing while playing multiplayer at the server.

    Corrections for campaigns

    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 3. Bandits could enter the city.
    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 3. After completing the quest with the bandits in the 3rd mission for Alexander, they did not stop building.
    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 5. When Alexander entered the Satrap camp, not all Persians came to Alexander's aid.
    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 7. To capture the enemy camp, it took a lot of troops. Now it can be done with one soldier.
    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 13. The mission was not completed correctly.
    • Alexander's campaign: Mission 15. Difficulties with placing donkeys on rafts.
    • Campaign Persia: Mission 3. Indestructible wall.
    • Campaign Persia: Mission 5. The minimum travel time was not set correctly. It has now been increased from 40 minutes to an hour.

    • The Ochus hero did not have the 2nd ability.

    • The colors of the numbers on the icons are now readable.
    • Added a full description of all abilities of heroes, as well as highlighting the current level in red.

    1.02 Changelog

    • The ability to play on computers with processors lower than Athlon XP has been implemented. Warning, performance on these processors drops by about 30%.

    Corrected mistakes

    • Fixed bug with game crash due to insufficient virtual memory.

    • Fixed a graphical bug when changing map views. Various stripes no longer appear.

    • In mission 15 for Macedonia, a bug with donkey loading has been fixed.
    • Fixed the final cutscene in the single player mission "A Matter of Honor".

    Game balance changes

    For the convenience of players, the size of messages on the Internet has been increased.

    Hero Ability Changes

    • Alexander. II ability adds 30 morale per level *. III ability - a temporary increase in attack 2 per level.
    • Ptolemy. II ability adds 20 HP per level. III ability reduces the attack speed of enemies by 15% per level.
    • Parmenia. I ability now - extraction of iron and gold 8% per level, II ability - add 10 protection to buildings per level, III ability - heals 60 HP per level.
    • Darius. I ability adds 20% to the extraction of stone per level, II ability reduces the attack of enemies by 1 per level, III ability reduces the defense of enemies by 3 per level.
    • Besh. Ability II takes 30 morale per level.
    • Ochus. The II ability adds 50 firing range per level, the III ability will take away 12% of the movement speed per level.
    • Abisares. Ability I adds 20% to food production per level, ability II adds 30 morale per level, ability III - a temporary increase in defense by 3 per level.
    • Sambus. I ability lowers the price of kshatriyas by 15% per level, II ability increases the protection of kshatriyas by 1 per level, III ability increases attack speed by 12% per level.
    • Por. I ability adds 200 HP to elephants per level,

        I've been playing based on your mods for 4-5 years now, much appreciate the work you've put in.

        I've read the comment section, but I still have questions regarding modding the game, I'm not all too familiar with early games and the way they were coded/designed so bear with me please:

        What language is the game coded in (did they make a custom one?) and what files/tools are necessary to read / mod it?

        I've checked out the cossacks tools website, however since there's a lot of resources listed on there, not sure which are useful for this game and which tools can change what exactly...

        Lastly, is there a more known modding/community discord for this game? Or does the cossacks discord hold most old gsc enthusiasts...

        Thanks again for your work and the added mapping tools on the recent modpacks and of course for your time!

      3. Glad to see you back!
        The game is made in Visual C++. If you're not familiar with reverse engineering I would advise against trying to mod the game's executable (the code).
        You can accoplish a lot of things by modifying files used by the executable itself. Some of them are sets of textures for buildings and units, others are responsible for in-game logic, properties etc. The exact whereabouts depend of what you're trying to accomplish.
        I can share a bit of my knowledge and tools I've accumulated over all this time, however due to this comment section being far from realtime I strongly suggest joining my new discord server. This one is here to stay, I promise :P

        I haven't found any active communities still enjoying the game sadly. That's the exact reason why I didn't abandon the project. Hopefully that'll change soon.

      1. I appreciate that :) I'm on a right track to create a master server emulator for the multiplayer but due to some time constraints it may take a while.
        Now to the question
        The game uses the same dmcr engine as the cossacks 1 and 2. Most (if not all) of the file types are pretty much identical so community made tools will do just fine. With that out of the way there is a great website with a ton of resources but it got blocked due to some internal hosting issues. I have no idea how long it's going to take for them to bring it back up but I encourage keeping an eye on it. http://cossacksworld.ucoz.co.uk

      2. Depending on the locale of the game it may use StarForce instead of SecuROM. If I remember correctly StarForce just outright refuses to start on the newer systems. The patch provided by the DRM devs works only from a certain version of the DRM (much newer than that used in Alexander). If you encounter a StarForce popup after launching the game then just download my installer instead and save youself some time.
